Majds maternal grandfather was the Ayatollah Mohammad Kazem Assar , who was born to an Iraqi mother and an Iranian father. The Ayatollah, along with other contemporary ulema, overcame traditional opposition to serve as a professor of philosophy at the University of Tehran.
